SPACE RE-INTERPRETATION
What we thought interesting about College of Fine Arts (CFA) Great Hall was its symmetrical space that is carefully located on the crossed axis which serves as a centre line. There are various ways to think about symmetry. Historically, symmetry was one of the Beaux-Arts architecture characteristics, so to find symmetry is quite easy among architecture designed before Modernism. Spatially, symmetry can act as a strong rule that makes other elements such as furniture, interior design obey. If not followed by symmetry in a symmetrical space, one will sense the unorganized impression from the space. When it comes to human perception, however, symmetry encourages us to envision the whole even when parts are visually hidden. Especially, if the hidden parts are the half given by the mirror axis, a person can easily imagine the rest half. Such concept of perception and reality created by symmetry was our starting point.
While considering Augmented Reality (AR) and Illusion as the themes of the project, we came up with juxtaposing the real space and abstracted space together such that an observer can sense the weird similarity between two scenes. Inspired by Étant donnés by Marcel Duchamp, we made a box that controls the view. We also thought about reversing sides with mirrors to enhance the symmetrical character of the space. For making the abstract scene, we planned to use projection and the faceted plaster surface using a 3D printer.
